Resolved Question: What's upstate New York and Ithaca really like?

What is Ithaca and Hudson Valley like? I'm thinking of relocating there, I'm from the West coast. The house and land I may buy is so much cheaper then here in the West I was in shock. The difference is large enough where I won't have to financially worry anymore. But that said I'm looking for a very liberal, hippie, organic market type town to live by and I heard Ithaca was like that? Are winters honestly just horrible? I don't mind snow or rain but I must be able to see sunlight. Here in Seattle you can go a month or more without seeing the sun or sky from the overcast, is upstate New York like that?
